Audacity by Melanie Crowder

Rating: 3/5

Summary:

This novel is inspired by the true story of Clara Lemlich. She came to NY via Russia at the flip of the 20th century and refused to work in factories with poor operating conditions. She ultimately organizes a strike of ladies mill employees in an incident referred to as the rebellion of 20,000.

Strengths:

This is a robust novel written in verse. It's superbly told and very compelling, however conjointly vividly brutal and often times utterly heart breaking. The book offers this serious and every now and then depressing tale stunning lightness. However, whereas supremely legible and - due to its type - fast to devour, it is also terribly substantial and loaded with feelings, reflections and which means.

Weaknesses:

One factor that ought to be stressed regarding this book is that the format mustn't deter an otherwise interested reader. The verse is free instead of alliterative, and therefore the length, 400 pages, would be half if written historically. Additionally, I found the fashion good and poetic – not within the least off-putting.

My Opinion:

This book educated me a great deal and displayed my eyes to a world choked with social injustice, hurt, pain, hunger and abuse. I knew, of course, concerning the horrific operating conditions of the immigrants at the start of nineteenth century.
