Rating: 5/5
Summary:
This novel portrays the bonds of friendships and the lengths to which others will go to protect you. George and Lenny are friends, but Lenny is special needs man, so George has had to look after him all the time. They were men from California who lived through the Great Depression.
Strengths
I loved Steinbeck's writing style; I believe the structure and sequence of events were all important and relevant; he portrayed English literature brilliantly.
Weaknesses:
I would have preferred Lenny and George to flee sooner, so George wouldn't have had to kill his closest friend with his own hands. Lenny desired to live as a wonderful human being who simply happened to have a mental illness.
My Opinion:
I believe the novel provides a valuable lesson by emphasizing that we sometimes must choose between two terrible choices. George noticed how upset his roommate was when his dog was killed by another person for being dirty; the man regretted not taking his dog's life because he could have done it with love. So George took Lenny's life, but with love and mercy.
