The Science of Interstellar by Kip Thorne

Rating: 5/5

Summary:

This would be Kip Thorne's explanation of the science in the film "Interstellar," which employs some contentious theories. He breaches a few criteria, but largely establishes this as a credible scenario if it takes place far enough in the future for some of the technology to be created. He also makes it apparent when anything is fantasy at this point. It's much more interesting when accompanied with Greg Keyes' novelization of the film's script. If you're going to watch the movie, read the novelization first so you know exactly what's going on on screen, then read this. Then go back and watch the movie one again. For you, it will be a true adventure. It's fascinating, and I definitely suggest it!

Strengths of the story:

I've been interested in astronomy on an amateur level for years, reading prominent writers like as Brian Greene and Caleb Sharf, and when I saw Interstellar, I gasped virtually the whole time. So, without hesitation, I purchased this book, and what I received much surpassed my expectations. I appreciated the ability to address all of the film's themes, from interstellar travel to using Wormholes to travel to far-flung corners of the universe, as well as all of the other questions that arise, stating at the outset of each section whether it is an established scientific truth, a "polite" hypothesis, or a wild guess.

Weaknesses of the story:

I'm sure the author didn't want to make us the readers feel stupid, but the work in this book on black holes, wormholes, & gravitational waves left me befuddled for the most part, especially when Thorne asks the reader questions ("No, I don't know" was my common response).

My opinion of the story:

I appreciated reading the Professor's perspectives, as well as his interactions with Chris Nolan and Matthew McConaughey and the army of highly smart scientists, engineers, and scholars. Being mentored by a Nobel winner was really energizing for me as an amateur physicist.
