We were Liars by E. Lockhart

Rating: 3/5

Summary:

We Were Liars is a about self-acceptance, family morals, and the potentially fatal repercussions of one's actions. It revolves around the Sinclair family, a rich and seemingly wonderful family who spend every summer on their private island.

Strengths:

It's quite flowery, and there are a lot of incomplete sentences and fragmented sentences at the end of each chapter, much as in prose. This one didn't appeal to me. The anticipation and buzz seemed to build things up too fast, and the big reveal and twist ended up being a letdown. I saw it happening from the beginning, and while I thought it was coming, I didn't think it stood out until it was unveiled. That made it a worse book for me because I had expected it long before the main character, which made her more confusing and irritating as a reader.

Weaknesses:

From the beginning, I had the uneasy feeling that something wasn't quite right, that Gat, Johnny, and Mirren were either long gone or just figments of her imagination. So, as it turned out that they had long since vanished, I felt as if I had known this was going to happen to some extent from the start. I didn't think any of the characters were especially well-drawn, either. They all seemed distant, and rather than being exposed subtly, they were all summed up in clever sentences.

My Opinion:

This one didn't appeal to me. The anticipation and buzz seemed to build things up too fast, and the big reveal and twist ended up being a letdown. I saw it happening from the beginning, and while I thought it was coming, I didn't think it stood out until it was unveiled.
